TEMPLECOMBE PREPARES

Preparations are underway here in Templecombe for the Queen's Platinum Jubilee celebrations during the holiday weekend at the start of June.

This page will be updated as arrangements are confirmed.
ACCESSION DAY
Wednesday 6th February 1952

Seventy years ago on 6th February 1952, King George VI died at the age of 56 and his daughter, Elizabeth, began her reign as Queen at the age of 25.

Elizabeth and Prince Philip had been at a game-viewing lodge in Kenya thousands of miles from home at the time of the King's death, unaware that their lives had changed forever.

After making the trip home, Elizabeth took her first steps on British soil as Queen and found a nation in mourning.

Her Majesty has gone on to become our longest-serving monarch and the first in history to reach the milestone of a Platinum Jubilee.
The Queen's Coronation Oath
Tuesday 2nd June 1953

The Coronation Oath, administered by the Archbishop

Archbishop. Madam, is your Majesty willing to take the Oath?
Queen. I am willing.

Archbishop. Will you solemnly promise and swear to govern the Peoples of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the Union of South Africa, Pakistan, and Ceylon, and of your Possessions and the other Territories to any of them belonging or pertaining, according to their respective laws and customs?
Queen. I solemnly promise so to do.

Archbishop. Will you to your power cause Law and Justice, in Mercy, to be executed in all your judgements?
Queen. I will.

Archbishop. Will you to the utmost of your power maintain the Laws of God and the true profession of the Gospel? Will you to the utmost of your power maintain in the United Kingdom the Protestant Reformed Religion established by law? Will you maintain and preserve inviolably the settlement of the Church of England, and the doctrine, worship, discipline, and government thereof, as by law established in England? And will you preserve unto the Bishops and Clergy of England, and to the Churches there committed to their charge, all such rights and privileges, as by law do or shall appertain to them or any of them?
Queen. All this I promise to do.

Queen. The things which I have here before promised, I will perform and keep. So help me God.

Flags for the village are being organised and work is underway with many new poles being painted and prepared.

ACCESSION DAY REMEMBERED
Sunday 6th February 2022

The Friends of Templecombe Station mark the 70th anniversary of the Queen's accession to the throne which falls on Sunday 6 February 2022.

This marks the date in 1952 when her father, King George VI, died unexpectedly when then Princess Elizabeth was just 25 years old.

While this therefore meant that she became Queen, the event was met with a period of mourning, so her coronation didn't come until later.

This is the first time a UK monarch has marked a platinum jubilee, and only a handful of leaders around the world have reached the milestone.
TEMPLECOMBE FLAGS
WILL FLY HIGH

CAN YOU FLY A FLAG?

During, May as the Queens Platinum Jubilee weekend nears, the flags will be flying across our village.

A focal point will include the flag of each Commonwealth Nation while Union flags will line our streets.

Many more flags are available than previously and the painting of poles is now underway.

If you have a flag holder on your house and would like to take part please can you let me know by email david@templecombevillage.uk

If demand is greater than availability, priority will be given to the main High Street (A357) along with the routes any parades will follow but everyone will be kept updated and help will be available to put up and take down the flags if needed.

Emails and personal details will be treated in confidence but everyone will be kept updated as the arrangements unfold.

The MellowTones

The MellowTones will be playing live at the Recreation Ground on Sunday 5th June.

Bass Guitarist, Mark (postie) Shotton will be picking his cords for us all to enjoy.

It must be assumed there will be none of the usual letter box post drops on this day.

Looking forward to seeing and hearing Mark and the band in action and hoping the T shirts will be available size XXL.
TEMPLECOMBE 'IN BLOOM' NEEDS YOU

Spring 2022

If you have a little time to spare and enjoy being outdoors, we need you to join our friendly 'In Bloom' group. We started in 2018 and were successful for two consecutive years entering the Somerset in Bloom competition.
Since then Covid has happened but we have maintained the flower beds at the Recreation Ground; the planters around the village and the border along Templars Barton.

For 2022 for the Queen's Platinum Jubilee, we are planning to spruce up the containers and flowerbeds with a red, white and blue theme. If you can help in any way eg planting / weeding / watering / painting / carpentry we would love to hear from you.
